Consider ChatGPT as spell check utility–one that is pretty good, but not perfect. As we work with this utility, its ability to recognize misspelled words improves. Over time, its ability to recognize misspelled words increases, based on how users interact with it.
Now imagine, as a customer of this service, you want all your history erased from this tool. The tool would need to “unlearn” all it has gained from your spelling mistakes, etc. This is a difficult proposition for a company that is trying to have the best spellchecker on the market. There is an incentive to NEVER delete/drop data.
Finally, consider that the utility is not making money. It’s losing millions of dollars a day.
OpenAI may claim they remove your data after 2 months. They may have contracts to not share your data, but in the larger picture in terms of money and market share, OpenAI will likely just “ask for forgiveness” over “permission”. They will pay some breach of contract fines and move ahead with the system based on your private conversations.
